Precision Pressure Forming of ABS for the Electronic Industry
A customer in the electronics industry was in need of a robust enclosure cover to house and protect circuit boards in an electronics application. The customer supplied drawings called out the use of black utility ABS for the cover that would measure 43.00" x 33.00", and be .250" thick. It featured an undercut flange formed around the perimeter of body, and a smooth paint grade surface finish.
Specializing in precision thermoforming of ABS and other materials we decided to manufacture this product on our 3-station rotary pressure forming machine. After pressure forming, the parts went through rigorous quality inspections to verify flatness, the forming details, and surface quality. Upon completion of thermoforming the part was then trimmed using a 5-axis CNC router, this process required meeting tolerance of ± 0.005". The total quantity of the run was 4,000 pieces which we delivered in four weeks from the start of production.
